A NEW children’s TV series about junior motocross riders will begin filming in Alice Springs in April and the producers want locals to start applying for jobs.
Four hundred jobs will be created in Central Australia for the production of upcoming kids’ drama MaveriX, a 10-episode TV series to be broadcast on the ABC and Netflix.
Industry Minister Nicole Manison attended Alice Springs Motorcycle Club on Friday to spruik the government’s $1.5 million investment in the series.
“MaveriX is the largest TV production to ever be filmed in the Territory and it is expected to inject $5 million into the local economy,” Ms Manison said.
“Investing in the Northern Territory Screen Industry is incredibly important.
“It helps share Territory stories and promote Territory experiences to the world and provides job opportunities for the screen sector and a wide range of Territory businesses.”
On-set jobs will be created across numerous fields, including electrical, mechanical, medical, hospitality, construction and, of course, acting.
Ms Manison could not say whether the production company had a quota for providing jobs to locals but said she expected the producers would try to source as many workers as they can from Central Australia “because that’s the best value for dollar.”
“If it’s a local person, they don’t have all the extra overheads, so they’re going to be aiming to get as many people as possible, locally,” Ms Manison said.

MaveriX co-creator and Alice Springs local Isaac Elliott said the series was five years in the making.
“It’s the most exciting sport in the world and it’s amazing to be able to bring the sport through MaveriX to the ABC,” Mr Elliott said.
“Being back in Alice Springs makes all the work up to this point seem real, but really it’s only just the beginning and now the rubber hits the road, or in this case the bikes hit the track and it’s full throttle from this point forward.
“Let’s Go!”
MaveriX follows six junior motocross riders selected for the first intake of the MaveriX Academy in Alice Springs, the home of dirt bike racing in Australia.
