Jol talks on early days at Yuendumu

Jol Fleming has a history of achievement that would be considerable for an able bodied person let along one with tretaplegia — the condition between paraplegia and quadriplegia.

Since an accident in 1981 he has not only built a business, that includes him leading tag-along tours into the Centralian desert country, he’s received numerous civic and motoring awards. Mr Fleming is giving an oral autobiography tomorrow evening, as part of the Heritage Festival, on his life from growing up at Yuendumu, boarding school traumas in Adelaide through to living in a wheelchair.

“There are a number of anecdotes from growing up at Yuendumu in the 1950s and 60s,” he said.

The talk will begin at 6pm in his 4WD Awareness in Hele Crescent.

Bring a chair and anything you want to drink. There will be a barbecue after the talk.

The film A Town Like Alice will be screened this evening at the YHA, which used to be the Pioneer Picture Theatre, on the corner of Parsons St and Leichhardt Tce from 7pm.

NT Heritage Council chairman Wayne Kraft will launch the Heritage Trail Brochure and Ted Egan will give an overview of the theatre.

There is also a Past Student Talk at the Hartley St School Museum from 5pm to 6pm.

Other events of interest in the Heritage Festival 2019 on the next two days are:

Alice on The Line at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station at 10am to 4.30pm tomorrow.

Students from Ross Park Primary will be dressed in old fashioned clothes and participating in activities of the Bradshaw era (1989-1908).

Anzac Oval Riverside Walk with Alec Nelson from 10am to 11am.

Starting from the Over 50s Club, the walk will include explanations of the extensive history associated with the precinct.

The Alice Springs Trivia Night at the Jump Inn from 7pm.

Ted Egan, one of the old characters of Alice Springs will give a presentation with words songs and photos at the Hartley Street School Museum from 12.30pm on Thursday.

A twilight history walk with Stuart Traynor and Alex Nelson focusing on what was in the north end of Todd St before Alice Plaza from 5pm.

A talk by Eleanor Hogan, the author of Alice Springs (2012) on, Ernestine Hill an Australian journalist, travel writer and novelist who spent much of her time in NT.

This talk is in the Alice Springs Public Library from 6pm to 7.30pm.,

Some events ask for a gold coin donation while anthers are free of charge.
