IT’S communities doing good work for Australia like Alice Springs which gets His Excellency General, the Honourable David Hurley, the Governor-General of Australia, out of bed in the morning.

In a visit to Alice Springs this week the Governor-General and Her Excellency, Linda Hurley, shared some encouraging words to the town’s people.

A town which he said “has good people from ancient to modern”.

“We are a land of good people,” he said in a speech during a mayoral reception at Alice Springs Town Council chambers on Tuesday night.

“Now, I’m often accused of seeing Australia through rose coloured glasses. That’s not so. “Linda and I see every day of the year Australians doing great work for each other.

“We have elements of doing the wrong thing at times, but the overall majority of Australians are doing a powerful work for each other.

“And that gets me out of bed every morning.

“And those qualities are exactly what we’ve seen here in Alice Springs in the last day and a half.”

During his stay the Governor-General paid visits to local organisations to discuss aspirations for the future of the town.

“From our little kids to get them healthy, get them to schools, and for our teenagers not opening doors for them for the future, but showing them how many doors are out there in life that you get the opportunity to knock on.

“And, of course, new businesses, new ways of supporting communities … and dealing with the economic impacts of the pandemic.”

His message to the people of Alice Springs was: “When you get up in the morning and you’re thinking about what you’re going to be doing here in Alice Springs, think about what you have already done.

“And what energy, and what purpose that can give you for the future.

“Australians will be looking to its heartland in the future.

“We will build strength from what you do here in the future. We will have a difficult season, no doubt about that.”
