A DECISION on a controversial Telstra mobile tower planned for the outskirts of Alice Springs has been deferred.
The NT Development Consent Authority (DCA) heard in an “emotional” meeting last month that the controversial development of a 30-metre high 4G tower flagged for Greatorex Rd, Ilparpa was everything from an “eyesore” and “bad for health” to a “good reliable service” which would be a “positive move forward”.
DCA chair Suzanna Phillip said in order to enable the proper consideration of the application the applicant, Planning Solutions, should provide an updated and detailed feasibility assessment of at least three sites for the establishment of the telecommunications facility and the rationale for the preferred site.

In their reasoning, Ms Phillip said DCA required “additional information and amended plans demonstrating how the amenity impacts of the proposal have been minimised”.
Ms Phillip said the DCA decided to defer further consideration of the application, as the authority body was not satisfied that the application properly addressed the requirements of, or clearly demonstrated, the suitability of the proposal … in particular to “ensure the development of a telecommunications facility does not unreasonably detract from the amenity
of the locality and neighbouring properties”.
They requested additional photomontages or similar from other locations in the area, prepared
with a view to better illustrate the likely visual impact of the proposed facility on views towards the site.
She said the body noted “that the monopole would be significantly higher than any other structure in the locality and may be expected to be visually prominent from much of the
surrounding area”.
Regional General Manager for Telstra in the NT, Nic Danks, said Telstra was finalising a response in relation to the proposed new Telstra tower at Ilparpa this week.
“We are providing some additional photo montages of the proposed site and the surroundings to show what the new tower will look like,” Mr Danks said.
“This area suffers from poor mobile coverage and this new site will help provide both additional coverage and capacity for local residents.”
