BABES on bulls has been given the green light to return to Coolalinga Tavern, after the NT Liquor Commission granted the popular watering hole a variation to its licence.

The tavern was in June slapped with a $3500 fine for holding the sometimes-nude mechanical bull event on its premises in contravention of its “family-friendly” licence.

But the commission has stipulated there is still no allowance for “adult entertainment”, meaning the tavern would have to comply with new licence conditions if and when Babes on Bulls returned.

In a report, the commission last week found Babes on Bulls may have encouraged irresponsible drinking while it was operating in breach of the liquor licence.

“The Commission is concerned by the evidence of what was occurring when the Babes on Bulls took place at the premises and particularly the various stages of undress and reference to ‘sexy round’,” the report said.

“The Commission considers this to be evidence of the adoption of a practice that encouraged irresponsible drinking at the premises.”

The commission said the tavern owner’s intentions for holding Babes on Bulls “is not easy listening”.

“It is intended that persons of a younger demographic would be encouraged to come to the premises,” the report found.

“The licensee made clear he intended for the DJ to continue at the premises and ‘hoped’ Babes on Bulls would return.”

The new licence conditions maintain that live entertainment may not be offered after midnight and that excessive noise will not be tolerated.

The commission also stipulated that Coolalinga Tavern must continue to operate as a “family-friendly tavern”, but it can now also provide “entertainment facilities suitable to other demographics on or after 9.30pm on any day of trade”.
