A man is facing assault charges after allegedly spitting in the face of a female police officer.

A KATHERINE man is facing assault charges after allegedly spitting in the face of a female police officer.

It is the second alleged police assault involving spitting in the Territory in four days.

Police had arrested the 35-year-old man after being called to a Katherine address in relation to a disturbance around 9.30pm Thursday.

While being processed in the Katherine watch house, the man allegedly spat in the officer’s face.

Both the officer and the alleged offender have undergone blood disease testing.

The man was refused bail and is expected to appear in Katherine Local Court on Friday on a raft of charges including assaulting a police officer.

It follows an incident on Monday night where a Mutitjulu police officer was allegedly assaulted and spat on by a woman while conducting a traffic apprehension.

The alleged incident was condemned by the NT Police Association, who are calling for the Government to toughen penalties around assaulting an officer.

NTPA president Paul McCue said the alleged incident was a “vile and disgusting attack”.

“Every day, our members put their body on the line to protect us all,” Mr McCue said.

“The government continues to sit on its hands on increases to the sentencing provisions in the Act, which must have a stronger deterrent for offenders who assault our police members.

“We have repeatedly asked the government to take action on this issue and they continue to sit on their hands.”
