Remote communities surrounding Alice Springs ‘strongly advised’ to stay home

THE Alice Springs Show has been cancelled just three days before it was set to begin over Covid-19 concerns for the second year running.

The Central Australian Show Society (CASS) made the announcement on Tuesday morning after receiving advice overnight from NT Health and the chief health officer.

CASS president Murray MacLeod told ABC Alice Springs’ Justin Fenwick that the decision was made with the public’s best interests at heart.

“I feel sorry for everyone that’s already here set up and that can’t move forward,” he said.

“The Showmen’s Guild has been here for a couple of weeks, setting up all the rides – they don’t know what their future holds now.

“They’re the ones that are probably in more trouble than we are.”

Mr MacLeod said he had preliminary discussions about opening up parts of the show to the public “when everything settles down”.

“We’re hoping to actually Rumball Hall in three weeks or a month’s time,” he said.

“Our plan is probably to open the competitions.

“We already have a lot of the art and craft, hobbies, photography already there, and that has already been judged.

“We will be posting a lot of photos of that stuff on Facebook over the next few days, but we are hoping to be able to put something on when all this Covid stuff settles down, so actually let the public come down and physically have a look.”

He said the cancellation was devastating, but thanked the community for its support.

“I’m sorry that we can’t put on the show again this year,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the Alice Springs community for their support, and I hope their support continues through to next year when hopefully we can actually have an event.”
