Prominent sportsman Aaron Blacker to run for Alice Springs mayor in August election
Civil engineer and prominent sports figure Aaron Blacker is the latest person to join the Alice Springs mayoral race, joining five others with a council background including four current councillors.

CIVIL engineer and prominent sports figure Aaron Blacker is the latest person to join the Alice Springs mayoral race for the upcoming 2021 Local Government Election, joining five others with a council background including four current councillors.
Aaron Blacker from the Central Australian Rugby Football League and the Central Australian Rugby Union posted on Facebook he would provide a “fresh perspective for Alice” if he were to become mayor in the town’s 14th council.
“I’m a proud local, a proud family man and I love Alice Springs and the Territory,” he said.
“I want to be instrumental in helping Alice Springs achieve all we can.
“It’s a long way to the election and I believe I can provide a dynamic and honest representation of our community.
“Please get in contact to let me know how I can help you, and us.”
The post has attracted more than 330 comments, 90 comments showing overwhelming support and 33 shares.
With seven weeks until voters head to the polls the mayoral race is heating up with Alice Springs town councillor’s Matt Paterson, Jimmy Cocking, Jamie de Brenni and Eli Melky having also nominated themselves for the role, along with former councillor Steve Brown.
Current Mayor Damien Ryan announced in May he would not contest the role in the upcoming election and has since been preselected by the Country Liberal Party for the seat of Linigari.
