An $100 million Public Housing Stimulus program designed to support small, local businesses and jobs in the construction industry in the Northern Territory has provided welcome financial stability, according to Cameron Nicholl of Nicholl Construction in Alice Springs.

Facilitated by the NT Government, Mr Nicholl said the program had allowed his business to weather the ebbs and flows of what he described as an unstable Territory economy, as well as providing his family-owned and run business with the confidence to hire more staff.

“As part of the Stimulus program we’ve picked up building kitchens in town housing and also doing driveways and concrete pathways,” Mr Nicholl said.

“We’ve also been able to expand our shop and put on a local guy as a first year apprentice cabinet maker.

“That’s a really good thing for us – to be able to build business and keep it steady.”

With more than $8 million of the Stimulus program budgeted for Alice Springs, Member for Braitling Dale Wakefield said ensuring work for businesses like Nicholl Construction was a vital part of stimulating the local economy.

“Alice Springs work must go to Alice Springs businesses,” Ms Wakefield said.

“A program like the $100 million Public Housing Stimulus is a really important part of making sure local jobs stay in Alice Springs.”

More than 85 businesses have registered for Stimulus work, with more than 260 work orders underway or completed.

“Getting work through the Stimulus is a pretty simple process so the dollars hit the ground rather than getting chewed up in bureaucracy,” Mr Nicholl said.
