Darwin City Council yesterday blocked off entry and exit points and erected signage telling commuters the closure was to allowed CDU to begin construction of the redevelopment on July 1, and that alternative parking options would be listed on the council’s website.
The NT News previously reported that CDU refused an offer from the council to operate the carpark on behalf of the university until construction started.
The removal of 391-parking bays has sparked fears among retailers that a change in foot traffic would hit businesses in the area hard.

A council spokeswoman said there were about 450 all-day car spaces available across the city, including in China Town, Westlane, McMinn St and State Square, along with other short term options.
