EARLIER: A car has ploughed through a Darwin city road barrier and knocked over a power pole, blocking a major route into the city and cutting off power across large parts of the city.

It is not known how far the power cuts extend.

A short sharp rainstorm hit the city early Tuesday afternoon.

St John Ambulance Territory Duty Manager Craig Garraway said it appeared the motorist “wasn’t driving appropriately to the conditions”.

“There was (a crash) out near Toyota where Daly St comes around, a car has lost control and hit a barrier there,” he said.

“The Stuart Highway has been closed due to a traffic incident, inbound and outbound between McMinn Street and Duke Street,” a Department of Infrastructure, planning and logistics spokesman said on Tuesday afternoon.

“Where possible, please seek an alternate route, such as Tiger Brennan Drive or Garramilla Boulevard.”

A second crash in the area involved three cars, just outside the Frontier Hotel on McMinn St.

There are not believed to be any injuries.
