New police facilities announced

Work on the site of a new $3.2m “hybrid” police station aimed at targeting the crime-hit suburb of Manoora has begun.

Demolition and clearing works for the new West Cairns Police Facility, across the road from the Cairns Villa and Leisure Park, were completed in late June.

It is expected the project will be complete in June 2022.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the procurement stage for consultants to prepare the design and tender documentation was currently under way.

“The construction program will be developed during the design stage and will depend on the procurement methodology selected and any site constraints,” the spokesman said.

“The enhanced policing presence will reassure the community, businesses, maintain safety, enforce the law and ensure prompt responses to calls for service.”

As work gets under way in Manoora, construction of the next stage of the $17m Cairns City Police Station upgrade is also about to begin.

Police Minister Mark Ryan last week said the two major building projects would support community safety strategies across the growing region.

“The Queensland Government is committed to supporting police operations and enhancing policing services for the Far North community,” Mr Ryan said.

“It is exciting to see the projects taking shape with preparation work such as demolition of existing buildings … at the site of the new West Cairns Police Facility.”

Previously, Mr Ryan said the Cairns West site would likely be a hybrid between a full-blown police station and a community police beat.

The $17m project at the Cairns Police Station will include upgraded office accommodation, interview rooms, and staff amenities.

It will support up to 57 full time equivalent jobs for contractors and builders in the Cairns community.
