When Far Northerners can expect a break from the heat as BoM forecasts thunderstorms

More dry, unrelenting heat and continuing heatwave warnings are on the cards for Far Northerners this week, but a change in conditions is expected. Find out when.

Another day or two of dry, unrelenting heat is on the cards for Far Northerners this week, in keeping with a recently issued heatwave warning for the region.

“We are expecting hot and humid conditions prevailing particularly across the Far North with severe heatwaves continuing and peaking on the Tropical East Coast today and on Thursday”, BoM meteorologist Brooke Pagel said.

Temperatures are set to hit 35C in Cairns, 34C in Innisfail, boiling up to 36C in Cooktown and a blazing 37C in Kowanyama on Thursday.

“Day time maximums are expected to trend back to average temperatures of 32-33C from Friday over the tropical east coast, but that humidity is likely to stick around,” Ms Pagel said.

There has been little respite during the week in the night time with temperatures not quite hitting the minimum average of 21-23C, which is usually the case during this time of year.

But conditions are set to change for the wetter very soon.

“We are looking at thunderstorms going in to Thursday and Friday,” Ms Pagel said.

“Rainfall is likely to become the primary concern, heavy rainfall with those severe storms.”

Weatherwise, this weekend should still be alright to head outdoors with Saturday bringing in a shower or two, most likely in the afternoon.

“Maybe a rumble of a thunderstorm but nothing too significant”, Ms Pagel said.
