Lawyers for the man accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl in North West Queensland after ploughing his vehicle into a group of people, have withdrawn from the case.
Trevor Caulton, 54, appeared via videolink in Cairns Supreme Court, from the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, on Tuesday, apparently unaware his solicitor Adam Dwyer was withdrawing.
The case was listed for pre-recording of evidence of children on May 13 but Mr Caulton will have to find new legal representation.
He told Justice James Henry he had self-funded lawyers and fully intended to find someone new and not represent himself.
“At this point in time Adam is still my lawyer,” Mr Caulton said.
“But he’s not, he’s withdrawn,” Justice Henry said.
“I’ll just have to find someone else … it’s been privately funded from the start,” Mr Caulton said.
The 54-year-old is accused of ploughing his car into a crowd of people in Mount Isa following what police called a “large disturbance”.
Kara Bob, 13, suffered critical head injuries in the incident at 2am in Delacour Drive on August 6, 2022 and died at the scene in the suburb of Pioneer.
Justice Henry noted a trial date had been listed for later this year.
He adjourned the matter for mention to May 15, to ascertain whether new lawyers had been engaged and to fix a date for the prerecording of children’s evidence.
Justice Henry said Justice Catherine Muir, based in Brisbane, would preside over the matter.
Police have alleged the incident occurred during a flare up in cross border First Nations family tensions between north west Queensland and the Northern Territory.
