A young Tablelands couple have been rescued by police after their car became stranded on a closed Cape York road.
Laura police rescued the couple, a 21-year-old male and 19-year-old female, from the Cape Melville Track, after their car became bogged on Friday, April 18.
It is understood they became stranded after their vehicle became bogged and their winch broke.
Special Constable Adam Tickner said the pair did the right thing by staying with the vehicle.
“It was fortunate that these people had enough food and water to last a few days, however this is very challenging terrain, especially during the wet season,” Special Constable Tickner said.
“These roads are closed for a reason, and phone reception is limited.”
Hopevale police attempted to locate the pair by road, however the roads were closed and impassable due to wet weather.
At around 10am on April 21, police and an aerial asset rescued the pair and transported them to Laura Police Station.
The pair sustained minor cuts and abrasions.
Special Constable Tickner urged visitors to exercise caution while driving in remote locations and always be prepared.
“When travelling on the Cape, ensure you have a satellite phone or personal locator peach, recovery gear, spare parts, first aid, and adequate food, water and fuel,” he said.
Anyone travelling to remote parts of Far North Queensland is urged to plan their trip, check park alerts, Queensland Traffic or the local council website for road conditions.
