Police extradited a 47-year-old Sydney man to Cairns overnight on child sexual offence charges following an extensive investigation.

Police will allege the man raped a child in Mareeba.

Police will also allege the man committed other incidents involving indecent treatment of children.

According to a police spokesperson, the matter was reported to Cairns District Child Protection and Investigation Unit in March last year and extensive investigations led to the man being located and arrested in New South Wales with the assistance of New South Wales police.

The man was brought to Cairns by detectives on Thursday night.

Cairns District Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Gooiker said police will continue to target offenders in our community.

“We investigate all reports of offences against children, and acknowledge the courage required by a young person to come forward and make a complaint,” Detective Senior Sergeant Gooiker said.

“Thanks to their bravery in speaking up, we will continue to work with vulnerable children to prosecute offenders in the courts.”

The man has been charged with one count each of rape and indecent treatment of children and did not appear in court on June 9.

Karen Longhurst from ATSILS appeared as duty lawyer for the man, who cannot be named, and she told the court he had not applied for bail and would be submitting a legal aid form.

“Obviously the matters, your Honour, are strictly indictable,” she said.

Police Prosecutor David Coleman told the court bail would be opposed and a brief of evidence had been ordered.

The man’s matters will be heard again on Friday, July 10.
