A CAIRNS homeowner has warned it’s a matter of time before someone is seriously injured after his home security system revealed a convoy of stolen cars tearing up a suburban street in scenes reminiscent of the film Tokyo Drift.

The alarming vision, time stamped at 2.49am on June 9, captured by a security camera in the front yard of a Westcourt house shows five cars hooning around in circles and doing wheel spins on the dirt road shoulder.

Allegedly stolen cars at Creedy St Westcourt on June 9 can be seen in security footage doing doughnuts and driving erratically.

On Tuesday police data revealed 48 cars have been stolen in the Cairns area to bring the rolling 2022 total to 612.

If the current trend continues for the remainder of 2022 a six-year stolen car record of 782 set last year will be easily surpassed come December 31.

A Creedy St resident, who asked not to be named, said drivers in allegedly stolen cars were an ongoing issue in the area.

He said a second video recorded on Tuesday night showed four vehicles being followed by a police car.

“It is only a matter of time before a vehicle loses control,” he said.

In Westcourt police logged 37 unlawful use of a motor vehicle offences in the past 12-months.

Its not clear if the Creedy St incident was officially reported to police but Sergeant Cary Coolican encouraged reporting of any suspicious behaviour.

Five cars were involved in the Creedy St incident last week.

“Queensland Police continue to work relentlessly to prevent and disrupt property crime and vehicle theft in the Greater Cairns area,” she said.

“Reports of hooning and illegal activity are often reported via Policelink and Crime Stoppers, and police use this information to ensure the safety of our road users.

“Police would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for the ongoing support and information to help keep our roads safe and remind motorists that you can expect police anywhere and anytime, to ensure the safety of our communities.”

Earlier this year a woman living on the same street said a nearby residential youth care facility had made life “disruptive and scary”.

She said rivalry between teen gangs often played out on the front lawn of the house and carers were powerless to intervene.

“It’s just out of control,” she said.
