Smithfield Library upgrade costs leap by $700k

The renovation of Cairns' second-busiest library has hit an unexpected hurdle, with costs soaring nearly $700,000 above initial estimates.

The renovation of Cairns' second-busiest library has hit an unexpected hurdle, with costs soaring nearly $700,000 above initial estimates.

Council Regional Council will consider approving $1.66m to modernise the Smithfield library, which has been closed since September 1 this year for renovations.

The council report states project cost is $689,622 above the original budget.

“While the project costing exceeds the allocated budget, it is considered that the tendered

prices reflect a difficult market where construction costs have escalated significantly in

the past four or more years,” the report said.

Built in 1998 and last refurbished in 2007, the Smithfield Library is the second busiest in the Cairns Libraries network.

The upgrade aims to revitalise the interior layout, fixtures, and technology infrastructure to create a safe, functional, and welcoming space for all users.

The work will double the library’s collection size, upgrade furniture and fixtures, and improve technology, including automatic scanning for book drop-offs and self-check-in/check-out stations.

Flexible learning spaces, children’s areas, collaboration zones, and enhanced learning resources will also be introduced to foster lifelong learning and education.

Works are scheduled to commence shortly, with an approved completion date of 30 June 2026.
