A prominent Queensland politician has outlined her plans for the future of the region after being crowned the most influential person in Far North Queensland - as voted by you.
Senator for Queensland Nita Green has been voted Far North Queensland’s most influential person by Cairns Post readers after making our list of 150 influential people in the region.
As Special Envoy for the Reef, Ms Green assured it would remain an important part of her work going forward alongside maintaining other election promises.
“In 2024, I am going to keep working hard in the reef space, the reef supports 64,000 jobs many of them in regional Queensland and it is worth protecting,” she said.
“I am going to continue to work to ease cost of living pressures, deliver more housing, fight for easier access to a doctor and for our region to be leading the way in the jobs of the future.
“When it comes to my role as Special Envoy for the Reef, I will continue to get out on the water and in catchments, I am eager to see the work that will be done as part of our $200m Landscape Repair Program.”
The senator thanked voters for their support of her work in the region.
“Since becoming a senator in 2019 I have been an avid fighter for regional Queenslanders,” she said.
“I feel very honoured to be voted most influential.”
Ms Green won the poll with 13 per cent of the vote - four per cent ahead of her competition.
Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter, LNP “up and comer” Joshua Auld and federal member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch jointly tied for runner up with nine per cent of the vote.
