Powerlink needs to put the axe to 385 trees that in the future could comprise high voltage underground cable linking transition stations at Mount Sheridan and White Rock.
The trees have been deemed as putting underground cables at risk, particularly during storm and cyclone season, but residents will have their say on exactly when the trees will be removed and how they would like to see the area improved.
Since the underground cables were installed in 1997 there has been significant development in the Mount Sheridan area, including the residential Forest Gardens Estate and over time, vegetation has grown around the underground cables and easement.
This includes species with intrusive root systems encroaching on the underground cables.
Parkland surrounding Alpina Terrace, Amazon Cl, Blueberry Cl, Matissia Cl and Sheehy Rd are all expected to be impacted by the tree loss.
Powerlink spokesman Chris Garlick said community consultation will include door knocking of homes in the Forest Gardens Estate and Mount Sheridan and a series of drop-in information sessions.
“We will be seeking input on two proposed options which all include how we conduct the vegetation management work and how we restore the area with new vegetation or other amenities,” he said.
Under option one tree removal and easement restoration works will be staggered during a three-year period between 2024 and 2026.
This option removes the need to disturb some areas more than once and enables progressive restoration works to occur in the cleared cluster areas.
Alternatively a second option would drag the process out to 2027 during a four-year period.
Community information drop-in sessions are being held at the Mount Sheridan Plaza beginning on Saturday June 15 through to June 22, excluding Sunday June 16.
Social media posts, signage along the easement, letterbox drops to properties in the project area and doorknocking will keep residents and the wider community up to date about the vegetation management works.
