After spending two and a half years working for a tourism PR consultancy in London, Pip Miller arrived in Cairns at the beginning of 1993.
Now the communications specialist has celebrated 30 years of publicising Far North Queensland’s movers, shakers, businesses and events since launching consultancy Pip Miller PR on 1 June, 1994.
Ms Miller said she was as passionate about her work today as she was back then.
“I still love what I do. From the nuts and bolts of press release writing to the higher-level
strategising, it is always a mixed bag, and no day is the same,” Ms Miller said.
“The variety keeps things fresh, and what’s more, there’s always a good story to tell.”
She said the industry had changed a lot but the job was all about interacting with people and building relationships.
“Things have changed a fair bit in terms of communications technology,” she said.
“While it is rewarding to read, see or hear your work in the media, it is the day-to-day
interactions with local journalists and reporters, co-ordinating media calls, and liaison that I
enjoy most.”
In 1993 she searched for PR jobs but found none, landing an account executive role
with a local design agency vested with reopening Daikyo’s Green Island Resort.
It was an opportunity to publicise the launch of the Palm Royale Cairns in September 1994 which was the stepping stone Ms Miller needed to branch out on her own.
Before long, Hilton Cairns and Port Douglas Reef Resorts were added to the mix.
Ms Miller said the early years set a busy tone.
“In 1996, I looked after the opening of the Reef Hotel Casino, managed a delegation of
international media for the 1996 UCI World Mountain Bike Championships, hosted President
Clinton’s visit to Port Douglas, and on the same weekend, the record-breaking AC/DC
concert attended by 20,000 fans at Cairns Showgrounds,” she said.
Since then, she has worked on countless local events, most notably, the Cairns Festival, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair — since 2013, and the Cairns Amateurs Carnival, since 2014.
Ms Miller said she enjoys “giving back” to the community whenever she can and actively supports community organisations and charitable causes.
Alongside managing her PR work, Pip has served on the Board of JUTE Theatre Company,
KickArts Contemporary Arts, and was a foundation member of the Women in Media FNQ branch.
