Cairns Esplanade alleged stabbing arrest

A 20-year-old Cairns North woman has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of her 39-year-old mother on Cairns Esplanade.

Isabella Aneta Cisarova had her matter mentioned in Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Solicitor Natasha Jackson said she would not request an application for bail.

The matter was adjourned until January 30, 2023 and she was remanded in custody.

Acting Inspector Alina Bell alleged the 20-year-old stabbed her mother with a sharp edge bladed weapon.

“There was a family connection there,” Insp Bell said.

A crime scene was declared on Wednesday afternoon, shutting down a section of the Cairns Esplanade as the bloodied 39-year-old woman was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

She was in a critical condition on Thursday morning but by midday Insp Bell said she had stabilised.

“She is in a stable condition, obviously with a very serious injury,” she said.

“Thanks to quick response to community members and first response officers we were able to get her medical treatment immediately and ensured her injuries were not fatal.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Ms Cisarova was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said a woman was taken to Cairns Hospital in serious condition with lacerations to her throat in an apparent stabbing about 5.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said officers responded to reports of an assault and arrived to find a woman in her 30s with a wound to her neck.

Speaking to media on the Esplanade on Wednesday evening, Senior Sergeant Matt Stevens described the scene outside Crystalbrook Riley as “grisly”.

“It’s unknown what’s happened before police arrived, there were a number of witnesses aiding her,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“It’s been described to me that the victim is in a serious condition but unknown if it’s life-threatening.”

Sgt Stevens said police suspected a bladed weapon was used, but that would form part of their investigations.

“A number of witnesses have rendered assistance,” Sgt Stevens said.

“I believe we’ve got a number of witnesses to the incident, it being on the Esplanade and that time of the day.

“It is a bit of a grisly scene considering there’s a bit of blood there.

“Definitely if there’s potential witnesses that police haven’t spoken to we’d love them to call police link.”

Numerous bystanders had their afternoon walks interrupted and had gathered to look on when police cordoned off the area out front of Crystalbrook Riley with tape.

Police on Wednesday night requested motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area and the Esplanade road has been closed to traffic between Double Tree by Hilton and Crystalbrook Riley.

A witness who didn't want to be named described the aftermath of the incident.

“It was very deep in her neck,” the witness said.

“There was probably two people trying to hold her neck.

“She had her hand over the throat because it was large it was hard to cover the whole thing. The police came pretty quickly.”
