A man has been flown to hospital in a life-threatening condition from the scene of a serious two-car crash on the Atherton Tablelands.

Emergency service vehicles were called to Jonsson Rd in Evelyn at 5.40am.

Two cars are understood to have collided on a sharp bend of the rural dirt road.

Responding to the emergency, the Rescue 510 Helicopter was dispatched from Cairns at 6.33am and arrived at the crash site at about 6.50am.

The chopper picked up a critically injured patient in his 20s and arrived back at the Cairns Hospital at 8am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man sustained life-threatening injuries to his legs.

The spokeswoman said the driver of the other car was also injured.

“We also had a secondary patient who was in his late teens and he sustained minor injuries and was transported to Atherton Hospital,” she said.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman initially asked drivers to avoid the area but by midday the crash site had been cleared.

“Initial investigations indicate the vehicles may have attempted to avoid an animal, near the intersection of Tumoulin Road,” she said.

It has now been revealed a motorist came across a dead cow on the road and was in the process of making the route safe by dragging the carcass from the road when a vehicle came around the corner and struck the man.

Its understood police arriving at the scene helped to save the man’s life by applying a tourniquet to the man’s legs while waiting for paramedics.

“Police have done a very good job, it’s amazing work,” a spokeswoman said.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

Police have also advised drivers using the Kuranda Range Road to take care due to low-lying fog.

“Motorists are advised that there is thick fog around the Kuranda Range. Please turn your headlights on and drive to the conditions,” a spokeswoman said.

The serious crash follows a collision near Atherton on July 17 which claimed the life of Frank and Joy Parise.
