Police were called to reports of a woman being assaulted on McLeod St, about 9.30pm Friday.

It is alleged a Brinsmead man, 28, was assaulting a 27-year-old woman known to him.

Police say members of the public intervened in an attempt to stop the assault, causing the man to flee the scene before he was struck by a passing car.

It is also alleged the man assaulted a police officer when he was taken into custody.

He has been charged with one count each of assault police and causing a traffic hazard, as well as four counts of contravention of a domestic violence order.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 21.
