A man has been charged with the murder of a woman and child following a fatal car crash in Doomadgee earlier this month.

Detectives from the Mount Isa Criminal Investigation Branch charged a 28-year-old man following the fatal crash on November 7 on the outskirts of Doomadgee, a remote Indigenous township 995km west of Cairns.

The driver, a 30-year-old Cloncurry woman, died at the scene and a 10-year-old girl died in Doomadgee Hospital.

Two other passengers were taken to Doomadgee Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a third passenger was in a critical condition.

Initial investigations showed there were two cars involved in the crash, with the 28-year-old the sole occupant of the second vehicle.

District Officer of Mount Isa District Superintendent Paul Austin previously said the man was in a relationship with the woman killed in the crash, and was a parent and stepfather to the children in the vehicle at the time.

“Our allegations will include that one vehicle was used to ram another vehicle, and cause that to leave the road,” Supt Austin said.

“There was a triple-0 call made to police at the time of the traffic crash.

He confirmed investigations into the incident were continuing.

He said police were working alongside other agencies to provide support to the grieving community.

“A number of specialist officers and services have been engaged and have supported police during this investigation,” Superintendant Austin said.

“We continue to support the Doomadgee community in their grief and offer our condolences to the family of both deceased persons and we will continue to work with the community and the council.

“They are still going through significant grief, and there was a lot of trauma as a result of what occurred.”

Supt Austin said they would also review the actions of police made during the investigation.

“We will look at the actions of the police both during the investigation, but also what lead up to this. What can we do better? Police will look at everything.”

The crash involved a white 2006 Toyota LandCruiser carrying the woman and her four children, and a black 2011 Nissan Maxima. The LandCruiser rolled during the incident, killing the driver and one child.

On November 27, detectives charged the man with two counts of murder domestic violence offence, three counts of attempt to murder domestic violence offence against a child, and one count of contravention of domestic violence order (aggravated offence).

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 27.

Police thanked the community for their assistance.
