The woman who slashed her own mum’s throat with a Stanley knife in a horrific public attack on the Cairns Esplanade has been sentenced in the Cairns Supreme Court.

Isabella Aneta Cisarova, 22, was found guilty of attempting to kill her mother with a box cutter at the conclusion of a trial in August.

The new arrival to Australia, originally from the Czech Republic, was charged with attempted murder after the attack outside the Crystalbrook Riley hotel on November 23, 2022.

The conclusion to a lengthy justice process followed a hearing last week where Cisarova’s defence counsel Tim Grau and Crown prosecutor Nathan Crane delivered arguments as to how long she should spend in prison for the violent and bloody attack.

Justice James Henry reserved his decision and after weighing arguments sentenced Cisarova to nine years in jail on Monday.

The 22-year-old narrowly escaped a 10 year jail term, which would have meant her being declared serious violent offender, meaning she would not be released until 80 per cent of the sentence had been served.

Cisarova is now required to serve a half of the nine-year custodial sentence before being eligible for parole.

Justice Henry in delivering the sentence said Cisarova experienced a life of abuse, a lack of love, and a deep sense of rejection and abandonment at the hands of the mother, which played a significant role in her 2022 actions.

“She... likely formed a schizo-type ideation,” Justice Henry said.

“Furthermore, based on the account of the eyewitnesses, the attack of Cisarova upon her mother seemed frenzied, and given the level of anger and aggression used in the attack, it may well represent a somewhat cathartic release and great deal of repressed rage.”

The victim was doing nothing wrong in a public place and was attacked from behind by Cisarova wielding a Stanley knife, she tried to move that knife at the victim, intending to kill them, Justice Henry said.

“I readily accept that the sentence for such an attempted murder would ordinarily fall within the 10 to 17 year range,” he said.

“However, this is not an ordinary case.

“In my view, the appropriate head sentence is nine years in prison.”

Cisarova will be eligible for parole midway-through 2029.
