A Gordonvale mother of four has been refused bail on a charge of unlawful stalking after allegedly making hundreds of phone calls to her ex partner over the New Year period – less than six months after being charged with a similar offence.

Chloe May Jean Sherman, 35, was not required to enter a plea to the charge of unlawful stalking in a domestic relationship in relation to phone calls allegedly made to her ex partner and the father of her four children in December 2024 and January 2025.

Defence lawyer Kate Brunger applied for bail, saying Sherman was the primary carer for the couple’s four children, one of whom had a disability.

She told the court the couple’s 19-year relationship had broken down recently and Sherman would comply with a no-contact clause.

Ms Brunger said Sherman was employed part-time in retail in Gordonvale.

She told the court that, if Sherman was ultimately convicted, she might not serve actual time in prison.

Police prosecutor Acting Senior Sergeant James Chapman opposed bail, saying Sherman was charged with a similar offence against her ex partner in October 2024, and had been on bail with a no-contact requirement at the time these calls were allegedly made.

He said the children’s father and his family were caring for the children and were able to continue this parenting role.

“It is a clear fixation, and this has gone beyond stalking,” Acting Senior Sergeant Chapman told the court.

He said the phone calls had been escalating from 81 in one day late December to 184 and 191 calls a day in early January, with more than 1065 calls made in total.

Magistrate Terence Browne revoked bail for the earlier offence and refused bail on the new charge of unlawful stalking, remanding Sherman in custody for mention on February 9, 2025.

“I’m concerned the defendant is an unacceptable risk … it seems she has been unable to control herself and her urges,” he said.

“I accept that separation is difficult, particularly when children are involved and the relationship has been for a long time, but this is far beyond acceptable behaviour.”

Mr Browne said Sherman could make another application for bail if there were new circumstances, such as expected delays in the finalisation of the matter.
