In an outpouring of sadness, city leaders have paid tribute to former Cairns mayor Kevin Byrne for the transformative impact he had on Far North Queensland, after his shock death on Thursday.

Mr Byrne was elected mayor of Cairns twice, first in 1992 and again in 2000.

Mr Byrne, a former Australian Army officer and Vietnam veteran, graduated from the Officer Cadet School Portsea in 1969, winning the academy’s top award – the sword of honour.

His 17-year military career included service in Vietnam, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

After his first stint as mayor he worked as an executive in the Papua New Guinean aviation and tourism industries.

After losing the 2008 mayoral election he remained active in advocacy for the region and eventually went on to become CEO of Advance Cairns in 2016.

In 2022 Mr Byrne spent more than 14 hours in an operating theatre during the life-threatening procedure, known as invasive Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy surgery, which involved removing a 4cm tumour at the junction between his oesophagus and stomach.

His swift recovery reportedly stunned family, friends and hospital staff.

In the first half of 2023 Mr Byrne underwent further surgery after suffering a broken hip; his recovery was slower but his zeal for political activism was not diminished.

His daughter Isabel Byrne said her father loved Cairns.

“I’ve always had the greatest admiration and respect for his contribution to the community,” she said.

“He’s been a civil servant his entire life — as a veteran, mayor and community leader. It was a joy and privilege to be raised by a father who was such a strong example of passion and dedication. I will carry fond memories always.

“On behalf of my mother Amanda and I, I wish to thank everyone who has extended their love and support today. The tributes to dad have been touching and sincere, and we are very grateful.”

As recently as August this year Mr Byrne was working behind the scenes to play kingmaker and began discussions with former top cop Paul Taylor about running for mayor in next year’s election.

Mr Taylor described Mr Byrne as an honest and forthright man who was passionate about the securing a healthy future for Cairns until his last breath.

“Kevin has been a passionate advocate for Cairns … over the years he’s committed his work to bettering the city,” Mr Taylor said.

“I saw him earlier in the week and he was still very positive about the city’s future. I’ve got no doubt he was going through pain but he’d never mention that and was talking instead about Cairns’ future.

“He made a great contribution to this city.

“Most people would have hung up their boots ages ago … but he wanted to keep going.

“He was a great bloke with a great character.”

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning relayed his deepest sympathies to Mr Byrne’s family.

“It is hard to overstate how instrumental his role was in totally transforming this city into what it is today,” he said.

“While his views were known to attract controversy from time to time, I don’t think anybody would contest his conviction and deep passion for this city.

“I am left reeling from this loss. Once I’ve had time to gather my thoughts, I’ll share a more detailed tribute about his contributions and legacy.”

From an organisation he once led as chief executive officer Advance Cairns chair Nick Trompf tipped his cap to the larger than life man, known to his mates simply as KB.

“Kevin made a significant contribution to Cairns over many years and was an incredibly passionate advocate for the region,” Mr Trompf said.

“He was one of the principal architects in the establishment of Advance Cairns in 2001, CEO of Advance Cairns for two years and served on the board for several years.

“Our condolences go to his family and many friends.”

From the Cairns RSL Sub Branch a former management board director and active member right up until the time of his death on Thursday.

It was with a heavy heart that Sub Branch President Nathan Shingles said farewelled the former Vietnam veteran.

“Kevin was not only a pillar of our community but also a steadfast beacon of courage, resilience and service,” he said.

“As a Vietnam veteran, he exemplified bravery, dedication, and selflessness, showing us all what true service to one’s county means.

“As Mayor of Cairns his leadership was transformative, his passion for our city contagious, and his tireless efforts to improve our community were inspirational.

“In these moments of profound loss, we are reminded of the strength and unity that our community possesses. As we grieve for Kevin, we also celebrate the life of a man who contributed so much to our community and our country.”

Cairns Post general manager Stephanie Campbell said he would be remembered for going out of his way to help.

“I have always enjoyed catching up or bumping into KB particularly over the past 12 months,” she said.

“He always supported me and would reach out to help if he thought he could. He will be missed.”

Mr Bynes was initially thought to have died early on Thursday morning, however the loss of his illustrious life was officially confirmed at 12.50pm at the Cairns Private Hospital.
