A 16-year-old boy has been arrested at a retirement village after he allegedly fled a stolen car when police managed to spike the vehicle’s tyres.
Body worn footage from Queensland Police Service shows officer Senior Constable Adrian Marek and his dog, PD Elvis, chasing the teen on Monday afternoon.
Authorities allege the Hope Vale boy had stolen a Toyota RAV4 before officers managed to stop the car with a tyre deflation device on the Kamerunga Bridge around 2.30pm.
It was reported the boy then abandoned the vehicle near Redlynch Intake Road a short time later, before running into a nearby cane field.
PD Elvis and Senior Constable Marek tracked the 16-year-old to the back of a retirement village.
Officer in Charge of the Cairns Dog Squad, Sergeant Dave Raymond, said it showed “the value of the police dog team when apprehending offenders”.
“Quite often we are the only way to locate offenders who have run away from a crime scene and the team in Cairns does a fantastic job of that,” he said.
The boy is further alleged to have been involved in the theft of a Mitsubishi Lancer from Arlington Esplanade on January 5, as well as the break-in of a Castleton Entrance property on January 6.
He has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of enter dwelling and commit.
The boy has since been refused bail and was scheduled to appear before the Cairns Children’s Court on Monday, January 14.
