Expect the rain to ease but the humidity to linger, with further rain a possibility later in the week

Isolated moderate falls a possibility later in the week, but an easing of the heavy rains over the weekend.

We’ve had some serious rain in the Far North over the last week, and there’s still a risk of isolated moderate falls for the next few days.

Senior Meteorologist at the Bureau Felim Hanniffy said the trough driving the rain is weakening and shifting northwards, and as it does the risk of heavier falls will diminish.

“The showers will stick around, but there’s not too much in them,” he said.

Monday and Tuesday will be similar, with a few showers but nothing much out of the ordinary, with a fresher south-easterly breeze coming into play.

“It could strengthen on Wednesday and you might get more showers, and some moderate and isolated heavy falls, particularly on the Cassowary Coast.”

The trend is for the showers to ease earlier in the week, with a potential surge mid-week with heavier falls.

“Later in the week the monsoon trough might strengthen, driven by surges from the Northern Hemisphere.”

High pressure systems as far away as Siberia can bring these surges on in the Far North, he said.

Any weather forecasts further ahead than mid week is more uncertain, but the Bureau’s expert’s best advice is for possibly more heavy rain late next week, centred further north in the Gulf and further up the Cape than Cairns.

“Activity for the time being has weakened and it’s in a relaxed phase, and temperatures are probably in a little bit of recovery to near average, and into the early next week a bit below average,” he said.

We can expect more thickening cloud mid-week with temperatures at or just below average.

The average high will be 31, with temperatures for Saturday and Sunday around 30.

Expect the humidity to hang on, with a dew point at 24 for Cairns.

“A dew point of 24-26 is pretty humid, although daytime temperatures could remain slightly on the cooler side,” Mr Hanniffy said.

Advice from the Bureau is high tides and king tides will peak during Sunday and Monday, which should not be a problem unless accompanied by any low pressure systems and strong winds.

But we’re not expecting them, so plain sailing.
