Dramatic rescue of missing Cape York group after car bogged in remote location

A GROUP of people including a two-year-old girl have been winched to safety from the banks of the Mitchell River after they abandoned their vehicle when it became bogged on a trip through remote Cape York.

A 23-year-old man and woman, the toddler, and a 19-year-old man who authorities were unaware was with the group were all flown to Kowanyama at approximately midday on Sunday.

A group of people have been winched to safety by the Rescue 510 chopper.

The group set out from Pormpuraaw for Kowanyama at about 2pm on Friday, May 20, but their vehicle was located by a member of the public bogged and abandoned south of the Coleman River about 1pm on Saturday.

They were reported missing at 7pm Saturday, with a search and rescue operation immediately getting under way.

Local police and Kowanyama SES members assisted with the search on foot.

The group was originally located by a QGAir Air Wing aircraft early on Sunday morning, before being rescued from the banks of the remote Mitchell River at about midday.

Rescue 510 was used to extract the group due to the lack of road access.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the group had been transported to Kowanyama for a check-up and medical treatment but were otherwise safe and well.
