Eighteen performers will take the stage at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair’s choreographed fashion event entitled Woven this week, showcasing 14 collections from across Queensland which celebrate the nation’s vibrant and burgeoning Indigenous fashion movement.
The highly touted 10th anniversary of CIAF’s 2023 fashion performance will feature the works of designers like Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, Simone Arnol & Holly McInnes, Bana Yirriji & Shannon Brett, and Deadly Weavers – Felicity Chapman among others.
A ticketed preview show on Thursday and two shows on Friday evening are currently on sale but won’t be available for long according to performance curator Lynelle Flinders.
“Each performance has capacity in Tanks Art Centre for 445 and the three shows are almost sold out,” Ms Flinders said.
“There is more choreography and performance than in previous years and it is a powerful combination of simple but significant movements and music that will surprise audiences.
“I was moved to tears this morning in rehearsal – the show will be spectacular.”
She credited this year’s “fresh and potent take” to new choreographers Jaydn and Mykelle Bingarape.
The sibling duo who will also be modelling and performing at the event.
