From serious pace setters to joggers in colourful tutus, almost 400 people laced up their boots to run, walk and jog for COUCH Wellness Centre.

Cairns Ironman kicked off on Friday, June 14 with a 5km charity fun run for official charity partner Cairns Organisation United for Cancer Health.

COUCH spokeswoman Jennifer Spilsbury said 376 people took part in the event which raised funds for the cancer wellness centre.

“There was lots of colour, I even saw a few tutus out there, and saw people of all sorts of abilities,” Ms Spilsbury said.

“There were very serious people setting serious times but others who were setting their own pace. I saw a wheelchair out there too, so it’s pretty amazing how people have thrown their arms around COUCH.”

For athletes who want to take part on the weekend’s main events, Ms Spilsbury said registrations were still open to join team COUCH or snag a spot at the finish line to support the athletes.

“If people have a burning desire to participate as individuals or teams of three supporting team COUCH, they can go to registration tent or the check in on (Friday) afternoon or Saturday and tell them you want to be part of team COUCH,” she said.

“They can also buy tickets to the COUCH finish line marquee at trybooking.com and watch all the athletes come through – we’ve got an awesome vantage point at the finish line.”

Ms Spilsbury said all proceeds raised would go toward supporting cancer patients in the community.

“(COUCH) helps people after the post-acute treatment stages so people can access the service to help rehabilitate and thrive after their cancer diagnosis,” she said.
