Cairns crime: Youth charged with murder at New Year’s Eve party fronts court

A 14-year-old boy charged with murder appeared in Cairns Children’s Court today. Police allege he fatally stabbed a 17-year-old boy at a wild New Year’s Eve party.

A 14-year-old Edmonton boy has been remanded in custody to reappear in the Children’s Court after being charged with stabbing another teenager to death at a suburban New Year’s party in Cairns.

He will next appear on March 18.

Another boy aged 17 and two men aged 18 and 28 were charged with obstructing police, after officers were called to break up the brawl about 1am.

The 18-year-old and the 28-year-old, both from Manoora, are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 18.

Police charged the youth with murder late on Saturday following the alleged stabbing death of a 17-year-old at a Manoora house party in the early hours of January 1.

Police will allege the 14-year-old stabbed two 17-year-olds about 1am at the party at Lychee Close.

The teen, who was allegedly stabbed in the abdomen, died at Cairns Hospital after being taken there in a private vehicle before paramedics arrived.

A second boy, 17, was discharged from Cairns Hospital on Sunday after suffering bottle stab wounds to the shoulder and kidney area.

A brawl involving about 30 people occurred after details of the party were posted on Facebook.

Acting Inspector Gary Hunter said all people charged in relation to the incident were not residents of the street and he issued a warning about spruiking parties on social media.

“We know from previous events, parties can get out of control, once advertised through social media,” he said.
