A Cairns business owner has called for tougher action on youth crime after his business was broken into for the 11th time in 10 months.

Owner of Freo’s Car Wash and Meldrum’s Pies in Paradise, Dan Freebody had his businesses broken into on Sunday night by youth offenders.

“I think they’re just doing it for the fun. They just trash the office and it’s the same kids too,” he said.

“It’s getting ridiculous.”

Despite causing major damage to doors and windows, Mr Freebody said the alleged offenders only stole small items such as soft drinks.

“I’d say we’re looking at $2000 for this (incident) by the time we repair the smashed window, and they’ve broken a door trying to get out,” he said

“They stole a couple drinks out the drink fridge, but they don’t ever really get much.”

However in previous instances, Mr Freebody said the alleged offenders had trashed offices and broke computer equipment.

“They’ve thrown computers on the ground and smashed them, but they never take them, or there have been other times they trash the office,” he said.

Mr Freebody said offenders needed to face strong consequences for their actions.

“I just think it’s the justice system that’s not working because it’s the same kids that keep coming back. How are they not locked away?” he said.

“They need to be taken away and given some sort of ability to try and improve their life.”
