Work has started to build on one of Far North Queensland’s longest off-road bikeways.
The new seven-kilometre Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Cycleway will create an active transport link for walkers, bike riders, and runners from Gordonvale to Cairns.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project aimed to meet increased demand for active transport in the Far North.
“I am pleased to announce HEH Civil has been awarded the contract to construct package one of the Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Cycleway,” Mr Bailey said.

“By separating bike and vehicle traffic, the project will improve safety, especially for local school communities, walkers, bike riders, and runners.
“The project will deliver a bikeway south of Cairns from Blackfellow Creek, Edmonton to Ruth Street, Woree, linking to other completed and planned cycleways.
Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the project supported local jobs across the Far North, and would link up with the off-road cycleway being constructed as part of the $481 million Edmonton to Gordonvale (E2G) project.

“Once all stages are complete, we’ll see around 20 km of direct cycleway from Gordonvale all the way through to the Cairns CBD
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said it is a welcome addition in active transport for the city linking the southern suburbs to the central business district.
“The bikeway will be built in two packages. The first stretching from Blackfellow Creek to Anderson Road overpass and the second linking Anderson Road overpass to Ruth Street.
“At Ruth Street, the cycleway will connect with the new shared pathway completed as part of the Cairns Southern Access Corridor – Stage Four: Kate Street to Aumuller Street project.”
