Aussie alt-rock icons Regurgitator land in Cairns

It’s been 25 years since Regurgitator went triple-platinum with their album Unit – now the band is back in the Far North and ready to rock alongside fresh local talent.

ICONS in Australia’s alternative-rock scene, Regurgitator, are bringing their high energy Drivetime tour to Cairns.

Enthusiasm for performing remains as strong as ever in the band’s co-founder Ben Ely, who has been making music as a singer, bassist and keyboard player for three decades.

“We didn’t play together for a couple years because of the pandemic, so once we got back together – and once we got over the shock of how loud it sounded and how fast the songs seemed – we realised how much we’d missed it,” Ely said.

“We’re feeling really excited and enthusiastic.

“There’s a lot of gratitude to be able to get on stage and there’s a crowd of people who will show up – still.”

Brisbane-based Regurgitator shot to fame in the late 1990s, their second album Unit going triple-platinum on the ARIA charts with hits including ! (The Song Formerly Known As) and Polyester Girl.

Supporting Regurgitator in their Cairns show will be local four-piece band The Zephyrbees.

Guitarist and singer for the group, Thomas Lowth, said he was still in shock from getting the call.

“To play with such a huge Aussie act – we’re ecstatic and so excited,” he said.

“A lot of the older ‘Gurge style is an inspiration of mine.”

“It’s really important that we get these bigger names up to Cairns, there’s definitely a callout for live music,” Lowth said.

Regurgitator will play at Edge Hill Tavern on Sunday, November 13, at 7.30pm, with support from The Zephyrbees and Sydney group Party Dozen.
