A woman has been charged after a car crashed into a pedestrian, killing a 76-year-old Yungaburra man, in Far North Queensland.
Police will allege a white MG sedan was travelling on Gillies Range Road about 1.10pm on Thursday, October 31, when it left the road and struck the elderly man.
The Yungaburra woman was located by police a short distance away after the vehicle was abandoned.
The 36-year-old Yungaburra woman has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and is due to appear before Mareeba Magistrates Court on November 1.
Part of the major highway remained shut on Thursday afternoon while police were on scene.
Police confirmed the 76-year-old man had sustained life-threatening injuries and had been declared dead on scene.
“Police are responding to a serious traffic crash at Yungaburra,” a spokeswoman from Queensland Police Service said.
“A man sustained life-threatening injuries.”
Paramedics were on the scene within 10 minutes of the incident.
A businessman who did not want to be named said he heard emergency service vehicles as they passed his business.
“I went for a walk to check it out,” he said.
“From what I can gather, it seems like a woman was driving the vehicle and apparently lost control, driven off the road and destroyed the signs and fence outside the Blue Summit Retreat.”
“Unfortunately at the same time, there was a pedestrian who was hit by the car and I understand he’s been declared deceased.”
Earlier, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed crews attended the scene.
“We assessed a male patient with life threatening injuries,” the spokeswoman said.
“We are no longer working on the patient and there have been no patient transports from the scene.”
There are also reports the vehicle collided with a pole.
The Gillies Range Road between Curtain Fig Tree Road and Kehoe Place remained closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon and motorists were urged to avoid the area.
Police urge anyone with information or relevant dashcam vision to come forward.
