A DARWIN alderman will move to ban “C U in the NT” branded products from local markets at the Darwin council meeting on Tuesday night.
The Territory’s unofficial slogan, adopted by satirical clothing brand NT Unofficial, sells products in a number of general stores and newsagencies, though it is understood knock-off brands and products operate out of Darwin’s market stalls.
Alderman Robin Knox will move a motion at Tuesday night’s meeting seeking legal advice and requesting material branded with the CUintheNT slogan be removed from public view at the Nightcliff markets.

Ms Knox said at a recent market day, a number of people had approached her complaining about the material, including local MP Natasha Fyles.
“A stall selling caps and stubby coolers with the branding CUinNT … was located near the pancake stall and the children’s playground at Nightcliff markets,” she said.

Ms Knox said private shops should be able to sell whatever they wanted but council was responsible for the markets and the material wasn’t appropriate at them, given their public location and family-friendly nature.
“People complained to me that this was a family friendly market and such a stall was not appropriate at a market that was visited by many children,” she said.
“Other people commented that they found the stall merchandise insulting and degrading to women.”
A statement from NT Unofficial said knock-offs were designed to be less tasteful and it could be worth council looking into banning them if they were problematic.
“We would encourage council to approach this on a case-by-case basis as our official stockist at Mindil markets has been selling for years without any issue,” the statement said.
“We do however welcome council removing any low-brow copycat brands who operate in these markets.
