Three machete-wielding teenagers have been arrested after a dramatic car chase ended in the car park of a shopping centre in Melbourne’s West.
Police allege the group invaded two homes on Monday morning while armed with machetes, and attempted a carjacking in Mickleham about 6.30am.
No one was injured.
The teens were chased down by Air Wing police later in the morning as they travelled through Wyndham Vale, Werribee and suburbs north-west of Melbourne, hitting speeds up to 200km/h in an allegedly stolen black Path Finder.
The teens exited the stolen car outside a shopping centre in Sunbury just before 10am where they were arrested by Critical Incident Response Team officers with the assistance of Air Wing.
A 16-year-old Wyndham Vale boy, a 15-year-old Ivanhoe girl and a 15-year-old Windsor girl are all currently in custody. No charges have been laid.
A bystander described the moment she saw one of the teenagers pinned to the ground as multiple police cars and helicopters swarmed a Sunbury shopping centre car park on Monday.
“They’ve got someone on the ground... They’ve got someone in hand cuffs... They’ve got two people,” Louisa told 3AW.
“One’s on the ground in handcuffs, they’ve (police) got zip ties on him and there’s another one further up sitting on the gutter.”
The bystander said one of the people pinned down was a man who appeared to be in his 30s, wearing runners, jeans, and a white singlet top.
“There’s about 20 police and probably more coming,” she said, noting there were helicopters overhead.
She said the man was complaining his cuffs were too tight, using “colourful” language while speaking to police.
Louisa said things were settling down, as there was “a lot of running around” when she first arrived at the scene.
Police are urging any witnesses and those with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
