Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s stern call on NT chief minister Natasha Fyles crepe attack

The Prime Minister has warned that a unprovoked attack on the NT chief minister Natasha Fyles is no laughing matter.

The Prime Minister has hit out after Northern Territory chief minister Natasha Fyles was allegedly attacked with a cream pancake, warning the issue is no laughing matter.

Ms Fyles was attending Darwin’s Nightcliff markets on Sunday when a Darwin real estate agent allegedly launched a cream covered crepe into the chief minister’s face.

After the chief minister suffered a black eye, Mr Albanese said the incident was no laughing matter and should not be dismissed as trivial by the media.

“The attack on Natasha Fyles should not be dismissed as something that is lighthearted,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

“People think ‘that's just a bit of cream thrown’. It was a plate smashed in the face of the chief minister of the Northern Territory, who was going about her day and thought it was a friend approaching.

“The consequences of that could have been much more serious than they've turned out to be.”

A 56-year-old woman has been formally charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident and has been granted bail. She is set to next appear in court on October 10.

Undeterred by the incident, Ms Fyles said she maintained an unwavering commitment to fulfil her duties as chief minister.

In May, Ms Fyles saw a similar incident when she was confronted by anti-fracking protesters while participating in a trail running event.

NT police said they were working in tandem with the government and the chief minister's office to bolster Ms Fyles’ security arrangements.
