NSW builder Ansa Homes in administration, 45 houses left unfinished

Houses in one major city have been left unfinished as a builder that was serving a suspension is put into liquidation.

Rental growth has ‘started to slow’ in Australia

Dozens of homes have been left unfinished as a NSW builder is put into liquidation.

Administrators were appointed to oversee the winding up of Ansa Homes on August 28.

A spokeswoman for the administrator firm Jirsch Sutherland, told NewsWire that Ansa Homes is $3m in debt and leaves at least 45 homes unfinished.

The Building Commission NSW suspended Ansa Homes’ building licence for 60 days, effective July 4 this year.

“The company had effectively ceased to trade prior to their appointment (of administrators),” the spokeswoman said.

“The major catalyst was the building license suspension, which resulted in cash flow issues.”

When the licence was suspended 45 were unfinished, but administrators were investigating further.

Staff have been stood down and creditors are owed more than $3m, which includes ATO debt, she says.

The Building Commission NSW found evidence of defective building work and improper conduct during inspections at Ansa Homes sites earlier in the year, and all work stopped immediately.

But just three days before that suspension was due to expire, Ansa’s building licence was cancelled, as court proceedings revealed the company would be liquidated.

The company was registered in Edmondson Park in Sydney’s west before the administrators stepped in.

State Building Minister Anoulack Chanthivong blamed 12 years of Liberal and National coalition governments for a “patchwork of regulations and regulators for building in NSW”.

“Building Commission NSW is up and running now, it’s suspending and cancelling licences where appropriate and taking action to weed bad players out of the market,” Mr Chanthivong said.

“This will be a tough time for those with unfinished homes and I urge anyone affected to consider making a claim through the Home Building Compensation Scheme.”

That scheme is insurance that builders must take out, and the homebuyer can claim against the pool should things go awry.

A Building Commission NSW spokesperson said Ansa Homes and its director were still liable to further disciplinary action.

The company and director were issued a show cause notice on August 20, and the director and company must now make submissions as to why they believe disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

Further action could include barring the director from holding a builder’s licence again.

The 60-day suspension was issued “as part of the disciplinary process in the interests of consumer protection”, the commission spokesperson said.
