‘He let himself down’: Darts player set to face music after repeatedly punching table following shock loss

A darts player has gone viral after he completely lost the plot following a shock loss that left him covered in blood and copping boos from the crowd.

A leading player has lost the plot at the World Darts Championship in London, with Cameron Menzies issuing an apology to fans and event officials after he repeatedly punched a table following a first-round loss.

Alexandra Palace has hosted some bruising affairs but this one literally turned bloody after the world No.26 punched the water table three times following his shock 3-2 loss to youngster Charlie Manby.

The frustrated Menzies had just missed his chance to stay alive in the contest before Manby nailed his dart to double one as the crowd chanted “Charlie”.

As the fireworks went off, Menzies bashed the table in frustration before he hugged his opponent and walked off the stage to a chorus of boos with his hand bleeding profusely.

More videos online show he put his hand over a live firework as it emitted sparkles.

Menzies was treated at the venue and quickly apologised for his reaction, revealing his uncle’s death and upcoming funeral had been on his mind.

“First of all, I would like to apologise for what happened. I’m sorry that I reacted in the manner that I did,” Menzies said in a statement.

“It’s not an excuse, but I have had a lot of things on my mind and I suppose it all just became too much at the end.

“It’s not been an easy time for me with my uncle Gary passing away recently. I saw him four days before he died and he gave me a look which told me how much he thought of me.

“Had I won the game, my second match would have been on the day of (my uncle) Gary’s funeral and that hasn’t been lost on me.

“Let me say again, that’s no excuse for what I did. It was the wrong thing to do and I don’t want it to take anything away from Charlie. He played well.

“This is not how I would like people to view me.”

Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle said Menzies would likely be punished but also needed to receive support.

“The concentration boiled over, the anger, the anguish of losing, but you have got control that,” he said.

“That is what conducting yourself the right way is all about, and he didn’t, he let himself down.

“I’m sure he will be punished accordingly by the Darts Regulation Authority, but hopefully the Professional Darts Players Association are there for him because he has clearly got issues.

“You cannot do that anywhere, let alone on the biggest stage of them all. I hope he can correct, in a way, his behaviour and move forward.”
