The grieving mother of Kaison Greaves has issued a heartbreaking tribute to her nine-year-old son, who tragically died after he became trapped between rocks at a beach on Easter Sunday.
Kaison fell and became trapped between rocks at South West Rocks beach on the NSW mid north coast region on Easter.
He was eventually freed, however he died at the scene.
His mother, Brook, thanked all those who attended a community vigil on Tuesday evening at the beach, as well as those who tried to save Kaison.
“ … We are so forever grateful he was not alone in his last moments and we know you did everything you could,” she wrote to Facebook.
She then went on to describe her son as an adventurer and a “free spirit”, who was a “cyclone of chaos and love” from the moment he was born.
“He brought colour to my life,” she wrote.
“He always was walking 10 steps in front of us, always in a rush, always wanting to go fast and always keeping us on our toes.”
He loved Sonic the Hedgehog, and his favourite colours were orange and yellow because “super shadow and super sonic’s eyes glow those colours”.
“He wanted to be a race car driver when he was older cause he loved the thrill of all things fast,” she wrote.
“His favourite family day included waterfall chasing and beach days, which would bring a calmness to him that only the water and nature could.”
Brooke said although “school was never his thing”, her son was bright and good with numbers and logical thinking.
She said he was “incredibly agile” and was always running around.
“One of his proudest moments was days before his last, when he successfully completed the adults courses at coffs treetop challenge all by himself,” she wrote.
“While we navigate life without him, please know that you have turned a place of sorrow for us, into a place of love, and we will never forget what you have done to help us.
“We will be back when we have the strength too. For now, hold your loved ones close and tell them you love every moment you get.”
Emergency services were called to the beach following reports a young boy had fallen and was stuck between rocks about 3.30pm on Sunday.
Mid North Coast Police District inspector Peter Walton said it was likely a “tragic misadventure”.
“Indications are it is nothing but a tragic misadventure which has resulted in the loss of a young child and unimaginable grief for the family,” Inspector Walton said.
“I can only imagine what the family was going through watching it all unfold … it was a very difficult situation for all that were there.
“Indications are that he was just playing on the rocks, and probably a number of kids play on those rocks every day.”
