Australian police have travelled overseas to investigate the suspected murder of Queensland mother-of-five Rehana Parvin in Bangladesh last year.
An Australian Federal Police (AFP) spokesperson said officers flew to the South Asian country in November as part of the investigation into the “suspected murder of an Australian citizen in Bangladesh”.
The investigation comes under a section of the Commonwealth Criminal Code which relates to the murder of an citizen or resident outside of Australia, the AFP spokesperson said.
Ms Parvin, 37, was found buried next to a septic tank in a village northwest of Dhaka in September last year.
She had travelled to her home country of Bangladesh in June.
The mother-of-five had spent one night at her parent’s house upon arrival before travelling to her in-law’s.
Ms Parvin’s mother reported her missing three days later.
The Bangladeshi police Assistant Superintendent in charge of the investigation at the time, Ashraful Alam, said Ms Parvin’s husband Awlad Hossain had travelled back to Australia one week after she was reported missing.
Superintendent Alam told NewsWire in October last year police had applied for an arrest warrant and were pursuing extradition of Mr Hossain from Queensland back to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh and Australia do not have an extradition treaty. However, there is a mechanism for people to be extradited between current and former Commonwealth countries, which Bangladesh has a history of exercising.
Mr Hossain’s sister Papia Akter and an “uncle” from Ms Parvin’s village, Amzad Hossain, were also arrested last year after reportedly confessing to know something about Ms Parvin’s disappearance.
The AFP investigation is reportedly ongoing, with a spokesperson saying further comment would be provided at an “appropriate” time.
