Territorians will ring in the New Year with one of the biggest names in Australian music at this year’s Darwin Waterfront celebration.

Award-winning Aussie band Birds of Tokyo will headline the free New Year’s Eve at Darwin Waterfront event, which will also feature local artists, kids entertainment, food stalls and two fireworks displays.

The two-time ARIA winning band, which headlined the 2021 AFL Grand Final, will take the crowd to the 9pm fireworks display before local DJ Lady Kay will help see out 2022.

Birds of Tokyo will be supported by local artists Mel Gray and Glen Forner, while kids heading along for the festivities will be entertained by Bananas in Pyjamas.

Eight-time ARIA winner Amy Shark headlined last year’s event solo after her band was unable to make the show due to Covid restrictions.

The event will be non-ticketed, alcohol and smoke free and waterfront restaurants will be open with bookings essential.

Major Events Minister Paul Kirby said the event was an opportunity to give Territorians and visitors the opportunity to celebrate 2022 and enjoy holiday trading.

“Bringing locals and visitors to the CBD during the Christmas period is a great way to share the holiday season cheer with our local businesses, restaurants and retailers who keep our city alive all year around,” he said.

Darwin Waterfront Corporation general manager Sam Burke said there was no better place to ring in the New Year than Darwin waterfront.

“Settle on the Waterfront lawns under the tropical night sky and enjoy excellent family entertainment and two spectacular firework displays,” he said.
