One of Queensland’s most beloved holiday sites has unveiled a brand new water park following a turbulent rebuild during Cyclone Alfred.
The BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut in Woree opened its revitalised Splash Park on Friday May 2, expanding the existing aquatic play space after 15 years of operation.
The new attraction was built by local contractors and boasts four waterslides, eight water-activated playing zones and a splash bucket dropping 200 litres of water every five minutes.
Ingenia tourism operations manager Ben Jones-Wilson said the rebuilt Splash Park will help put Cairns on the map for domestic and international tourists.
“We’re incredibly proud to unveil our brand new splash park — built by Cairns locals, for Cairns families and Cairns visitors,” Mr Wilson said.
“After 15 years of making memories, it was time to create a bigger, better, more accessible space where even more kids can splash, slide and play together.
“The rebuild hasn’t been without its challenges, especially following Cyclone Alfred, but seeing the park buzzing with happy families already makes it all worth it.”
Local families can access the water park even if they are not a guest at the Cairns Coconut.
“We do have day passes available outside of peak periods, and people can certainly get those online,” Mr Wilson said.
Adelaide resident Jono Crago and his sons Lennox, 7, and Carter, 2, were holidaying at the Cairns Coconut when the Splash Park opened.
“When they said it was going to be ready this week the kids were really excited,” Mr Crago said.
“This is our first time in Cairns and it’s been fantastic, we would definitely come back especially for the water park.
“My favourites are the slides and the massive bucket, they’re super awesome,” Lennox added.
The Cairns Coconut Splash Park is open seven days a week, 8am to 7pm.
