Older Townsville locals will be spoilt with a variety of exhibitors at the Avanti Health Centres second annual Over 50s Expo.

The expo will be held at Avanti Health Centre in North Ward on Saturday, August 3, aiming to inspire the community to live an active lifestyle by providing information catered to the ageing population.

With a state-of-the-art gym boasting a majestic view of Magnetic Island, Avanti Health Centre is close to 600 members, who come to workout, get health assessments, attend information sessions and get expert help from dietitians, physiotherapists and further referrals to GPs and specialists.

Member of Avanti Health Centre, 71-year-old Charlotte Wilson lives by the phrase ‘just do it’.

When she wanted to focus on her health and fitness, she decided to join Avanti almost two years ago.

“I joined Avanti about two weeks after they opened, so nearly two years ago and I just love the atmosphere,” she said.

“I enjoy working out, but I had never been to a gym before. I was very intimidated but when I first came here the staff were just as beautiful as the view here.”

“I live on my own and I love having a chat and making friends here.”

Ms Wilson, who attends the gym at least five times a week, said she was impressed by last years expo and will be attending on Saturday.

“We are all over 50 and approaching that age group where you have to start thinking about going into a nursing home, there was stall from Meals on Wheels last year, so it was important for us to know about that stuff,” she said.

Coinciding with the gyms second birthday and in partnership with SALT Directory, the expo will teach attendees about how to live an active and healthy life.

Ranging from community groups, health and recreation clubs, aged care, home care and more, Avanti Health Centre chief executive Darryl Grundy said the North Ward gym will be a buzz of community and information, and that all are welcome.

“We will have almost 30 businesses and local organisations represented, it’s just a fabulous way for people to come in and ask questions, found out groups and places that they can be a part of,” he said.

“Taking away a lot of the mystery and confusion on health, it’s a great way to learn how to age healthily, feel happier, prevent cognitive decline and more.”
“It will be a lot of fun with prizes, games and cake.”

Mr Grundy said that with a sea of information about how it age healthily, it can become confusing. He said events like this help take the ‘noise’ out of topics such as nutrition, exercise and healthcare.

“This is a real opportunity to break down some of the barriers and confusion and give actual facts and useful information that people can adapt and use,” he said.

Mr Grundy said with only one in five Australians meeting their physical activity guidelines, help is needed to ensure older Aussies live fit and healthy lives as they age.

“As we get older you need to maintain your muscle mass, if you don’t that can leads to problems with balance, strength and mobility,” he said.

“Avanti was set up for people to be able to get all those services under one roof.”

Centre manager and exercise physiotherapist Matthew Hurley said the expo was a great chance for people to speak with business and groups on a more casual level.

“What we found last year with our expo was that a lot of the people that came along really loved the fact that it was more personable with each expo stall holder, to ask questions and get answers,” he said.

“The first step is always to seek out information and we are trying to provide a laid back environment where people can come and ask questions without any expectation.”

The Over 50s Expo will be held at Avanti Health Centre, Unit 1, Level 5/31 Leichhardt St on August 3.

The expo will run from 9am to 1pm and is free and open to the public.
