Australia’s globetrotting youth circus is heading to the Territory on its nationwide tour, showcasing the country’s future stars.
The Flying Fruit Fly Circus will leap, soar and entertain at Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs next Saturday night.
Performers as young as 12 will present Tempo, a work that the show’s director Jake Silvestro has been developing since 2021.
Mr Silvestro, an acrobat who has toured at major events like the Edinburgh Fringe and Sydney Festival, said these pint-sized performers should not be underestimated.
“It’s a really fun show and a chance to experience something pretty unique,” the 33-year-old said.
“Even though they’re kids, they move and perform like professionals, and we think it’s going to be unlike anything a lot of people have seen.”
The whimsical, “all-ages” story about a famous musician searching for his lost orchestra is told through music rather than dialogue, thanks to live instrumentals from the multi-talented cast.
Founded in 1979, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus runs a vigorous select-entry program and has performed around the world including on Broadway.
“We run a ten-year program starting in year 3, so some of the performers have been with the company since they were quite little and are now teenagers,” Mr Silvestro said.
“They’re absolutely loving it. We’re lucky with this ensemble, they’re all quite close and looking after of each other.”
Coming straight from Townsville, the circus will perform at Araluen Arts Centre on Saturday May 4, 6.30pm.
