Investigators are still trying to determine how a car with two corrections officers inside rolled north of Alice Springs – sending both of them to hospital.
The Department of Corrections has confirmed a “single-vehicle accident” involving a Toyota Troopcarrier LandCruiser at Stuart Hwy and Tanami Rd on Tuesday about 2pm belonged to them.
“The vehicle was occupied by two correctional officers, with no other passengers. Emergency services attended, and both officers were taken to Alice Springs Hospital for assessment and treatment,” a department spokesman said.
“No serious injuries were reported.
“NT Police are investigating the incident, and the Department of Corrections is providing support to the officers and their families.”
This masthead understands the vehicle was returning from Yuendumu, where it had dropped a prisoner off to court.
NT Police said the driver of the car “returned a negative roadside breath test at the scene”.
United Workers Union NT Secretary Erina Early said the officers were left “battered and bruised” and it was lucky no prisoners were on board.
“There’s no seatbelts in the back for prisoners … this really raises questions about the safety of long-range escorts for prisoners by corrections officers,” she said.
